Sisters by love, not birth

By Sharon Craig of Granite Falls

My only sister, Catherine, was such a special person. We were five years apart in age, but it never seemed to matter. She always treated me like a friend, as well as a sister. We went to the movies a lot. We went on a trip to New York City with a couple other girlfriends, lifetime memories for all of us. She always stuck up for me when I needed her too.

She married two years before I did. She lost her first baby… so her only child, a son, who was the apple of her eye. When she was diagnosed with cancer and a few weeks later, passed away, my life suddenly changed.

Then a couple years later my sister-in-law passed away. My brother-in-law remarried about two years later.

That’s when Gerri came into my life!

Gerri hailed from Texas and was my age. We are both October born. The journey of our life trains have been on the same tracks for years now. Sadly, we both lost our only sisters and we both have lost our oldest sons. We both have empty seats on our trains of life.

No matter how much time goes by in between our visits, we always seem able to pick up where we left off before. How fortunate am I?

She and I love garage sales, thrift stores, country music, and we both cried when Toby Keith died. We have long talks on the phone to keep the fires of friendship and sisterhood going. No one could feel more blessed than I do.

How great it is to have a Texas lady in my life that needed another “sister” too! I am officially her “up North sister.” Gerri never seems out-of-reach to me.
