Growing herbs like coriander (pictured) can add a little extra fun to your garden, and can give you more fresh options in the kitchen all summer long. Herbs can also help ward off mosquitoes, and provide nice smelling fragrances in the garden and in your home. Stock photo

Are you looking for a fun, new addition to your summer planter?  Have you thought about adding in some herbs?

Not only do you get to enjoy the wonderful fragrances of the herbs, but you also get to harvest from the plant, using them in your kitchen all summer long.  One of my favorite herbs to add into my planters is Indian Mint.  This mint trails out of the planters, spilling over the side all the way to the ground and smells delicious.  The mojito mint is also handy to have around for the occasional Saturday afternoon beverage.

If mints aren’t your style, basil is always a wonderful addition to a planter and your Italian dishes.  Instead of the traditional green colored basil, try a dark leaf basil such as Red Rubin to spice things up a little.  If it is mosquitos you despise, add some lemon grass, lemon balm or lemon thyme to your planter.  The bugs don’t like the scent and every time you brush against the planter, the smell is released, and the mosquitos will disappear.

Lavender and rosemary are also wonderful additions you can use around the home. Be careful not to overwater these herbs though – they tend to die off quickly if their roots are wet for too long.

Summer is coming and the grill is calling.  Add some fresh herbs into your deck planters and enjoy them all summer long.
